Intimate as a village, sophisticated as a metropolis, the capital city of Ireland is a centre of infinite interest and activity. Dublin embodies two very distinctly different features: its rich and varied history and cultural inheritance which integrates harmoniously with the ever-changing, vibrant beat of contemporary life in Dublin today.
The capital city boasts a long and vibrant history of filmmaking and has long serviced the industry as a location for period dramas, black comedies, or offbeat musicals. It has shown many faces to the camera, from Georgian beauty to inner-city grit. Trinity College, home to the Book of Kells, was the setting for Educating Rita, while tougher urban landscape contributed invaluable atmosphere to films as diverse as Veronica Guerin, My Left Foot, The Commitments, In The Name Of The Father, The Boxer and Agnes Brown. The capital was also the main location for much of Neil Jordan’s historical drama, Michael Collins, set during the Irish War of Independence of 1916-1922.
For Alan Parker’s sensational adaptation of Angela’s Ashes the filmmakers recreated the now vanished slums of Frank McCourt's Limerick childhood on Dublin’s northside and more recently it serviced Neil Jordan’s Golden Globe-nominated Breakfast On Pluto. Jim Sheridan’s, In America, Laws of Attraction starring Pierce Brosnan and Julianne Moore and John Schultz’s The Honeymooners saw a number of locations around the city double for New York.
Ireland and its capital city boast a highly-skilled crew base with approximately six crews available for feature production at any one time. In fact Dublin hosts a freelance technician base of over 1,600 with every skill and craft represented. In addition, there are about 50 facility companies in Ireland, with many located in Dublin city.
Situated in Bray, Co. Wicklow just 12 miles south of Dublin, Ardmore Studios is Ireland’s only four walled studio. Ardmore is uniquely positioned to provide a comprehensive, one-stop-shop package of world class film and television facilities, tailored to suit an individual project production and budget needs.
