Recent incoming productions such as The Damned United, Lost in Austen, Wuthering Heights, Crusoe and Brideshead Revisited have been attracted by the diverse ranges of landscapes on offer, which make it an ideal base for location drama - from untouched historic rural villages, landscapes and stately homes to cosmopolitan cities, ancient abbeys and vast expanses of coastline. The contrastingly bleak landscapes have provided the backdrop to more contemporary, dark drama, such as Channel 4's critically acclaimed Red Riding and ITV's recent hit Unforgiven. Successful long running series such as Emmerdale, Heartbeat, The Royal and A Touch of Frost have generated a strong infrastructure of highly skilled crew and facilities houses, which means that Yorkshire has everything on hand to support any scale of film or television production.

Yorkshire and the Humber is one of the most film-friendly centres in Europe, with all 21 local authorities signed up to Screen Yorkshire's Film Friendly Partnership network, committed to working closely with production companies to ensure that filming happens as easily and effectively as possible. Screen Yorkshire is the first point of call for all your filming needs, offering a full production liaison service free of charge, from finding the right location, crew and facilities, locating build and office space, to brokering deals with local hotels and liasing with local authorities and ancillary services on your behalf. Screen Yorkshire has over 1200 skilled and experienced crew and 200 facilities companies registered on its online database, many of whom have worked with major productions throughout the UK and Internationally. Screen Yorkshire also has an online database of over 4,000 locations from the region, which means they can provide you with access to a secure online pool of locations that are tailored to your specific request.

Yorkshire's independent production sector

Yorkshire is home to over 100 independent production companies, these include Rollem - the production company behind The Chase and Fat Friends and True North, which has grown to be one of the biggest independent production companies in the UK since it was established in 2002. Screenhouse Productions and Real Life Media Productions are both well established independent production companies with a successful track record in the documentary sector. Sheffield is home to Warp Films, the company behind This Is England and low budget feature film studios Warp X, who showcased their first two feature films; A Complete History of My Sexual Failures and Donkey Punch at the Sundance Film Festival in 2008 to critical acclaim. Screen Yorkshire has a production fund, which can invest in feature film and television production which films in the region. Recent credits include; The Damned United, Red Riding, Unforgiven, Wuthering Heights, Lost in Austen, Brideshead Revisited, The Cottage and the BAFTA award winning This Is England.

Writer Sally Wainwright on ITV’s hit drama Unforgiven Writer Sally Wainwright talks about the significance of the dramatic West Yorkshire landscape as the backdrop for ITV's hit drama Unforgiven. Unforgiven, which pulled in 7.2 million viewers when it screened on ITV in January, filmed at locations across West Yorkshire in 2008. Screen Yorkshire supported Unforgiven through its Production Fund and provided locations and crewing support.
